Community Conversation - Shirley Chilsholm in Her Own Words

March 11th

6pm - 7:30pm

Free Admission

Long Island History Museum

Against the backdrop of the Voices and Votes exhibition, we invite you to join a "Community Conversation" on the theme of Equal Rights for Women. This particular conversation will be anchored in a speech from Shirley Chisholm, which she gave on the floor of Congress on May 21, 1969. Community Conversation programs provide an opportunity for people to come together for thoughtful discussion about our shared values as Americans—past, present, and future. This one-off, text-based discussion will be facilitated by Joe Murphy, Director of Grant-Making at Humanities New York (HNY) and will tackle an important aspect of life in a democracy and will encourage frank dialogue. Community Conversations allow New Yorkers to join in discussions that offer an alternative to received wisdom and provide the chance to take part in a shared community dialogue.

Shirley Chisholm: Unbossed and Unbowed, A One-Woman Show by Ingrid Grifith

May 9th

7pm - 9:30pm

Admission: LIM Member $25, Non-member $30 - Purchase tickets here

This one-woman show tells the largely unheard story of Shirley St. Hill Chisholm, a Brooklyn-born politician of immigrant parents, who, in the 20th century, was the first African-American woman to win a seat in Congress and run for President. Starring Ingrid Griffith as Chisholm and the characters that surround her life,  Unbossed & Unbowed dramatizes the Civil Rights era, the unrest of the 1960s, the patriarchal system, and the all-boys network Shirley Chisholm was up against, many themes we still see in today's politics.
