Community Conversation – Freedom and the Responsibilities of Citizenship
The Smithsonian exhibition “Voices and Votes: Democracy in America” offers a chance to reconsider America’s democratic experiment. The exhibition along with our supporting exhibition, “Sackets Harbor in the North Country,” highlights the roads to democracy.

Built in 1817, the Union Hotel was THE meeting place! Citizens, military leaders, and politicians met to discuss current affairs and make collective plans. Today you too can carry on that community tradition!
